This time we’ve got some tasty pizza facts for you.

1. February 9th is National Pizza Day!

February 9th is National Pizza Day in the USA! Any guesses on just how much pizza Americans eat in a year? The answer is that a whopping 3 billion pizzas are sold in the U.S. each and every year! That’s on top of another 1 billion frozen pizzas. How do they sell so many? Well, it helps that 17% of all restaurants in the U.S. serve the dish. There truly is no denying Americans’ love of all things pizza.

2. The Margherita Pizza’s Royal Origins:

Margherita pizza was first served in 1889 when King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Italy visited Naples. The story goes that the two were presented three pizzas: one topped with lard and basil; one with tomato; and one with basil, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. The third pizza dazzled the queen with its green, white, and red toppings that matched the colors of the Italian flag. She loved it so much that it was named “pizza margherita” after her.

3. How is Italian Pizza Different from American Pizza?

The basis for pizza is said to have originated over 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt as a form of bread. The process was introduced to Italy later on, where it was made in the style of focaccia bread. It was then introduced to the U.S. by Italian immigrants in the 1900s. This style became Americanized over time, giving birth to the modern American pizza. Italian pizza was traditionally served to one person and eaten with a knife and fork, whereas American pizzas are much bigger and cut with a pizza cutter so they can be shared, and are eaten with one’s hands.

Reading all this is enough to make one’s stomach growl. Why not head out to your local pizzeria for a quick slice…or three? And don’t forget to look for “Pizza” Decor Pikmin Seedlings while you’re there!
