They say money can’t buy happiness, but we’ve got some fun coin trivia that just might!

1. Coins Come in All Shapes and Sizes

The world is full of coins, but almost every one of them is round. So why is that? Well, most countries seem to agree that circles really are the most convenient shape, both to use and to manufacture. Plus, no sharp corners cuts down on wear and tear. That said, not all coins are round; there are coins in some countries that are square, wavy, triangular, or otherwise oddly angular. There are some really unusual shapes out there, especially if you include commemorative coins. Some of these are in the shapes of countries, while others can even split in two!

2. The Most Valuable Coin in the World

An American silver dollar coin minted in 1794 sold for a staggering $10 million US dollars to a collector in 2013. The coin is known as the “Flowing Hair” dollar due to its depiction of Liberty’s voluminous locks. The high price is said to be due to how few were minted, coupled with the good condition this coin was in. You might expect a gold coin to be the world’s most valuable, but in this case, silver takes the gold.

3. Curious Coin Customs

There is a shared custom in various parts of the world of giving coins to wish for the happiness of loved ones. In England, some will put a sixpence coin in the left shoe of a bride on her wedding day. The sixpence has long been thought to bring people happiness, so the act symbolizes a wish for her joy and prosperity in married life. In Switzerland, it is said that giving a coin to a newborn will help them lead a prosperous life. People also purchase a coin on each of the child’s birthdays to be given on the day of their wedding.

With how often we use coins in our daily lives, it’s easy to forget how culturally unique they really are. Why not channel your newfound appreciation into tracking down some fun “Coin” Decor Pikmin on your next walk?
